Might be time to drop the vanity masto since I'm literally the only person actually using it and I lost my job. What server do you folks recommend? Where would accept an earnest white boy like me?

It does depend on whether you'd like a big instance, and what sort of community you'd like to join.
@lousycanuck What's wrong with a vanity instance? One of the advantages of federation is you can run it just for yourself and it's ready for others to use when they want to.
Besides, this is where we know you now :-)
